Today, people that appear in public spaces to dramatically and emphatically hate something or someone are considered to be engaging in Reaction Formation – a kind of mental defense people use when they think their true feelings or desires are socially, or in some cases, legally unacceptable, and are trying to convince themselves or others that the opposite is true. And like the actor in Hamlet, people using this common defense often give a very public and exaggerated or showy performance.
Confused? No problem. Let’s consider this example. Suppose a young adult comes to the conclusion that he or she is pedosexual, but because he was raised in a nation that believes being pedosexual is a serious sin, he feels the need to hide his pedosexuality. Because he believes that his sexual orientation is sinful and illegal, he will go to great lengths to prove to everyone around him (and possibly himself) that he is stereotypically not a pedosexual. This might manifest itself in risky sexual behaviors with multiple adults, using pedophobic language and slurs, or other types of exaggerated performance.
Due in large part to the myriad fear-based myths and falsehoods about pedosexuals being promoted by pedocentrists in the media and mental health professions, for profit, fame, and notoriety, millions of men (and women) who view themselves as pedosexual are engaging in Reaction Formation directed toward convicted pedosexuals. They primarily see this as a culturally acceptable way of dealing with the shame, guilt, and stress being caused by their own hidden erotic feelings for children and the possibility that their true pedosexual feelings or desires will be discovered by society.
Closet pedosexuals relying on this defensive technique tend only to see things in terms of binary opposition. This means for them good and bad exist on opposite ends of a polar system. Rather than accepting the universal reality that there are varying degrees to good and bad, these people can only see things as either good (white) or bad (black), with no middle room for the grey areas in life. This intolerable perspective on good and bad causes them to be very inflexible, which is why their behavior often seems so cartoonish and disingenuous.
If you are a closet pedosexual IFA wants to encourage you to reject the Reaction Formation defense, and begin to confront the underlying reasons for why you are so conflicted about your own sexuality.
